Preventive Dentistry

If you are a diligent brusher and flosser at home, you might be wondering why twice-yearly trips to the dentist for preventive care are necessary. Unfortunately, brushing and flossing alone cannot keep dental hazards from progressing. Regular check-ups and cleans at your dentist are essential to preventing teeth and gum problems from developing.

The dentists at Tamworth Oral Health and Dental Care are passionate about helping patients feel empowered about taking care of their oral health. With proper home care and preventive dentistry at our Tamworth, NSW dental clinic, you can enjoy healthy teeth and gums, keeping your smile looking and feeling its best.

Preventive Dental Check-Ups and Cleans

Preventive care is the heart of dentistry. Usually, the best way to help prevent the most common dental problems, including tooth decay and gum disease, is with regular check-ups and cleans. We recommend you see our dentists twice a year. Our goal with routine examinations is to either prevent problems from happening or deal with them when they are in their earliest stages. What this means for our patients is usually more conservative treatments.

Your dental examination will include a tooth-by-tooth visual examination and dental x-rays or some other type of digital imaging. In addition, we will screen for oral cancer and review any changes to your overall health.

Seeing us twice a year allows our patients to ask questions about their oral health. If there are any areas of your home care that can benefit from some tweaking, we can also discuss that.

Gum Disease Prevention and Treatment

Many people don’t realise that gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss among adults. In most cases, gum disease can be prevented with proper home care and good preventive care.

Everyone develops plaque on their teeth. It is nearly impossible to remove all of this sticky substance from teeth with brushing and flossing alone. What is left behind hardens into a substance called tartar. If we do not remove this from the teeth with regular dental cleans, it builds up on the teeth and gets below the gum line. It is one of the leading causes of gum disease.

By the time gums are inflamed and bleeding, gum disease may have already taken hold. This serious condition has been tied not only to serious diseases of the body, such as heart disease and certain kinds of cancers, but it can also lead to tooth loss.

Gum disease is treatable, but it usually can only be managed rather than cured. If you have gum disease, we will often recommend a programme of teeth cleans that take place every few months. In more severe cases of periodontal disease, medication or surgical treatments may be required.
